With the holidays right around the corner, you are probably starting to make all those holiday plans from who to invite and what to serve for dinner to how to decorate and how to manage those holiday energy bills. Hosting at the holidays can be quite challenging and fun at the same time. However, those increased monthly utility bills that are sure to come your way during the holidays and after are certainly not as much fun.
Here at PJs HVAC Repair, LLC we wanted to take time out to offer all our valued clients some valuable insight on how to manage all those utility and energy bills this year while hosting all your holiday guests. Cutting back on your electricity usage is the best way of accomplishing this task and we are here to help.
For starters, before all the guests start arriving, take a moment to turn down the temperature on your water heater. When there are more people in your house a great deal more hot water will be used. When this occurs, your hot water heater has to work much longer and harder to accommodate the added needs which obviously results in higher energy bills.
To offset the added numbers, we highly recommend you lower your hot water temperatures by about 10 degrees. Doing so will reduce the amount of electricity used by near to 5%. With that said, the ideal temperature to set your water heater at is 120 degrees while hosting your holiday guests and parties and you are apt to be quite happy when those monthly utility bills finally come through.
Next, we strongly suggest you be aware of the ‘tricks’ your electricity providers typically play during the holiday seasons. They tend to take advantage of peak hours when there is a high demand for electricity knowing full well that most homeowners are unaware and will simply pay the price. Nobody wants to put a damper on the holidays, but surely your electricity provider is not concerned. They will spike the prices during peak hours and reap all the rewards. Be sure to pay attention to these peak hours and make every effort to cut back on your electricity usage during these times.
Finally, one of the best ways of managing and reducing holiday energy bills is by simply turning back your home’s thermostat by 8 to 10 degrees during the day and night which can save you as much as 10% on your annual energy bills. Investing in a programmable thermostat can be an ideal tool for managing the temperature in your home when you are away and is a surefire way to reduce your utility costs.
