Oh No, I Have An AC Water Leak

After a long hard day at work you venture home to relax, unwind and enjoy your cool and comfortable air conditioning. However, when you get there you find that the air conditioning in your home is not working effectively at all. The temperatures in your home are anything but cool and certainly not providing you with the comfort you had expected. Remembering that you have not changed the air filter in quite a while, you head on over to do just that, only to find a puddle of water around the base of your AC system. As would be the case with anyone, your initial thought is ‘oh great, I have an AC water leak.” But that may not be the case at all.

Air conditioning cooling systems do not actually use water in the cooling process. Your AC system runs with electricity, however, it does not need to use fuel of any type to actually generate the cool air in your living space. The cool atmospheres in your home are present because your air conditioner is programmed to remove the heat from your home by way of evaporating refrigerant.

Refrigerant evaporates within the evaporator coil of your cooling system. As it evaporates it actually draws the heat out of your home’s atmosphere, travels out to the condenser coil, and then releases that very same heat into the air outdoors. This simple process continues until such time that your home’s atmosphere is comfortable and cool and yes, you can sit, relax and unwind.

Getting back to your AC water leak, the fluid on the floor is more than likely the result of ice that has melted off of your system’s evaporator coil. The formation of this ice is typically the result of a refrigerant leak. If you have a refrigerant leak present the coil will become cold enough to freeze the condensation that has been accumulated on it. After a period of time, that frozen condensation, now ice, will melt off and create that noticeable puddle on the floor. When this occurs, it is imperative that you waste no time at all in getting that leak fixed as soon as possible so as to prevent any serious damage to your AC system.
