Tips for an Energy Efficient Home Cooling System

Spring has finally arrived which means that the sweltering hot summer season is right around the corner.  With that said, homeowners will soon be thinking about all their summer cooling costs and trying to find energy saving tactics that can help minimize their out of pocket expense.  As the summer temperatures rise, so do your cooling system bills which is why the professionals here at PJs HVAC Repair, LLC want to share some important tips for turning your energy eating system into an energy efficient system this summer.

Cooling costs certainly inflate in the summer months since your AC system typically runs all day and all night.  However, there are some simple steps you can take to improve the efficiency of your cooling system and help out your pocketbook as well.  We have shared those tips here with you and hope you find them every bit as useful as they are practical.

Conserve Energy with these Cooling System Tips!

  • Start by ensuring that the vents indoors are not blocked by furniture or other items so as to allow the even, consistent flow of air into your living space. You should also get in the habit of vacuuming the vents before the start of the season and multiple times throughout since clogged vents or accumulated dust and particles can interfere with airflow and cause your cooling system to work harder and longer.
  • To further enhance the efficiency of your system you might turn up your indoor thermostat by a mere 5-7 degrees, which will help to stabilize and accommodate the ups and downs in the interior temperatures of your home. Adjusting your thermostat will keep your system from having to start up and turn off multiple times and minimize how long or how hard the system will need to perform in order to provide cool, comfortable temperatures in your living space.  When your AC system is turned on and off multiple times, rather than allowed to remain at a stable, consistent temperature, you use much more energy and your cooling costs are much higher.
  • Another very important and practical means of increasing energy efficiency is routine maintenance of your HVAC system air ducts. Your cooling system ductwork plays a significant role in the overall performance of your air conditioning system and in its energy efficiency.  Routine maintenance will ensure that there are no leaks present, and should leaks be discovered, proper air duct sealing should be performed to maximize energy savings and minimize the loss of airflow.
  • Your outdoor condenser should also be clear of debris, leaves, grass and the likes at all times. If the unit is blocked by debris it can result in system delays and interruptions and certainly present with poor overall performance.
  • Finally, your oven and clothes dryer give off a whole lot of heat, thereby increasing the indoor temperatures of your living space. Minimizing the use of both these appliances during daytime hours, will help to minimize cooling costs and increase energy efficiency.    In addition, minimizing the amount of sunlight that penetrates your home by closing blinds and curtains during the daytime hours, will contribute to a more efficient cooling system and a decrease in your monthly utility and energy bills.
